About Us

Laboratory for Calibration of the Ventilation Measuring Devices is a part of the Strata Mechanics Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Cracow at 27 Reymonta Street. As a result of research conducted at the Institute related to flow metrology, an aerodynamic tunnel was installed in 1970 (developed at the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology). Over time, this tunnel underwent extensive modernization, equipped with new measuring instruments, and the range of flow velocities covered was expanded.

In 1993, the Flow Measurements Laboratory of the Mine Ventilation Laboratory was registered at the District Office of Measures in Cracow, authorized to verify anemometers, issue certificates of verification, and mark verified anemometers with a registration mark. In 1997, the Flow Measurements Laboratory of the Mine Ventilation Laboratory participated in interlaboratory comparative measurements for the calibration of anemometers, conducted as part of the international EUROMET program.

In the face of increasing orders for the calibration of anemometers, pressure gauges, barometers, and psychrometers, both from the mining sector and other industries related to ventilation, the director of the Institute decided to establish Laboratory for Calibration of the Ventilation Measuring Devices on May 10, 2004.

Currently, the laboratory has two dedicated rooms. The first one is an aerodynamic tunnel, enabling precise calibration of all types of anemometers for air velocities ranging from 0.15 to 40 m/s. The second room serves as a station for calibrating pressure gauges and barometers.

On September 2, 2008, Laboratory for Calibration of the Ventilation Measuring Devices Instruments received accreditation certificate No. AP 118 issued by the Polish Centre for Accreditation. Accreditation covers calibration in the following areas:

  • Air velocity,
  • Pressure.

Since October 1, 2022, the laboratory has been accredited for determining the constants of pitot tubes.
